Ready to homeschool Sixth Grade language arts? My goal is to guide you step-by-step through the process of learning to use the free, high-quality language arts curriculum from Core Knowledge to homeschool your student.
What is Language Arts? Language arts is a broad term referring to a variety of subjects including reading, spelling, composition, penmanship, grammar, language mechanics, punctuation, vocabulary, literature, and literary skills.
What Will Your Student Learn in Sixth Grade? Your student will continue to improve their research and composition skills while also learning how to assemble and give presentations and speeches. They’ll continue to advance their understanding of grammatical concepts, vocabulary, and concepts involved with literary analysis. Throughout the eight units, students will study a variety of short stories from people and cultures around the world, read Temple Grandin’s book Calling All Minds: How to Create and Think Like an Inventor, as well as the award-winning book 90 Miles to Havana. They’ll also do a deep dive into Roman and Greek history and literature including the famous stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey. They’ll round out those classical units with a study of Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar and finish up the year with a poetry unit.
